The first airport that most visitors use as a starting hub is Stockholm Arlanda although Vasteras may be an option with a transfer to Arlanda.

There are many flight search companies that can quote for flights to Stockholm and beyond. A large number of our guests use www.skyscanner.net

Populair  is the airline that flies into Gällivare from/to Stockholm Arlanda.

Available from Gällivare railway station (maximum 4 persons) on request at 700kr each way. Please book early as we may not be able to offer them at short notice.

Also available from Gällivare airport, the cost being 800kr.

BUS

Bus to Porjus leaves from outside Gällivare railway station. 4 times a day Monday to Friday, 1 a day Sat and Sun.

Gällivare to Porjus: Price around 85kr per person.

Bus to Porjus leaves from Luleå central bus station

Luleå to Porjus:    4 buses a day during the week, 2 of which are direct, Route 44/45. Price around 302kr per person

TRAIN:

Stockholm to Gällivare: Prices start from 455kr for seat only and 600kr for a couchette per person. Private compartments from 1400kr.

Luleå to Gällivare:        Prices are around 300kr per person.

Kiruna to Gällivare:      Prices start from around 150kr per person.

Then either bus or transfer from Gällivare.

Alternatively, have a look at the Interrail and Eurail sites, depending in which country you live, as they offer good deals on country passes which are recognised by Swedish railways (SJ).

HIRE CAR

The best option is to go through the various travel sites to get the best price. Hire cars available from Gällivare, Luleå and Kiruna airports and Gällivare station. Major rental firms, Avis, Hertz, Europcar etc are located here.

If you are arriving at Gällivare station and internet car hire sites do not give you the option to pick up in the town centre, send me an e mail with your details as we can try to arrange for the car to be picked up from a hotel opposite the station. If this isn’t possible you will have to get a taxi from outside the station to the airport to pick the car up.

For those who don’t have satnav if you are driving from Gällivare we are the first turn to the right signposted “Järnvägsstation” just past the Porjus village sign. If you are driving from the Jokkmokk direction, drive all the way through the village and turn left at the Järnvägsstation signpost.

For those who may be nervous about winter driving in the snow, it’s not as bad as you’d think! I certainly started off driving at 40 kmph with long lines of locals behind me but all cars are equipped with winter tyres and you soon get the hang of it.
